On February 13, 2025, Damen Shipyards Group announced the introduction of a new line of support ships called the Logistics Support Ship (LSS) series. This initiative aims to help modern naval forces operate more efficiently and effectively while keeping costs down.

The LSS series includes two types of ships: the LSS 9000, which is 127 meters long, and the LSS 11000, which measures 140 meters. These ships are designed to meet the various needs of today’s navies, providing a flexible range of features to ensure they are ready for different missions.

The LSS vessels are equipped with systems that allow them to refuel other ships at sea, transport goods easily, and carry a significant amount of supplies, including fuel, ammunition, food, and personnel. They also come with modern navigation and communication technologies to ensure safe and smooth operations. These features will make the LSS ships essential for supporting naval operations far from their home bases.

One of the key benefits of the LSS design is its ability to be quickly adapted for different missions, such as disaster relief, humanitarian aid, and training exercises. These ships can operate in various marine environments, ranging from deep oceans to coastal areas. This flexibility results from advanced design techniques that blend military and commercial technologies, helping to keep both operating and building costs lower.

In line with many navies’ sustainability goals, the LSS ships are equipped with advanced engines designed to cut down on fuel use and emissions.

Piet van Rooij, the Commercial Manager for Defense & Security at Damen, shared that the LSS was developed based on feedback from naval clients worldwide. He believes it effectively addresses the challenges they face now and will continue to face in the future. He highlighted that the LSS provides improved capabilities, efficiency, and sustainability at a competitive price, making it key to supporting global naval strategies.

This announcement comes after the arrival of the Combat Support Ship “Den Helder” at Damen’s shipyard in Vlissingen in December 2024, marking an important step in Damen’s ongoing efforts to enhance naval support and logistics.
