Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. has given the green light to bring in 1,520 breeder goats and 4,310 sheep. The goal is to improve the local livestock industry, especially in Mindanao. This is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen goat and sheep farming in the country.
The imported animals, which are intended to enhance local herds, include 155 Anglo Nubian male goats, 175 Boer male goats, and 1,190 Boer female goats. These will be sent to farms in Barili, Cebu, and Makilala, North Cotabato. For the sheep, the plan includes 260 Dorper rams and 4,050 Dorper ewes, which will also be distributed in North Cotabato.
The Department of Agriculture has not yet announced when the bidding for the importation will take place. However, the money needed to buy the goats and sheep has already been set aside in the 2024 budget. After the bidding process is finished, the imported animals are expected to arrive within 90 days.
To ensure quality, the goats and sheep must be between 6 to 15 months old. The male goats need to weigh at least 35 kilograms, while the females should weigh at least 30 kilograms after their quarantine. The sheep must weigh at least 40 kilograms for the rams and 35 kilograms for the ewes. Additionally, the sheep must come from registered farms and be purebred.
Anglo Nubian goats are valued for their meat, milk, and hides, though they don’t produce large amounts of milk. Boer goats, which are primarily raised for meat, are particularly popular due to their quality and size. Prices for breeder goats from the U.S. can range from $800 to $5,000, depending on their quality. Dorper sheep are known for their fast growth and high-quality meat, with each selling for between $500 and $1,500.
This importation supports the Philippine government’s efforts to strengthen the livestock industry. By improving local herds, the aim is to achieve more sustainable meat production and contribute to food security in the country. Additionally, raising goats and sheep can provide better income for farmers, create job opportunities, and boost the agricultural sector overall.
