The Australian Dollar (AUD) has been gaining momentum, with the AUD/USD pair climbing higher due to market expectations of potential rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve (Fed). This anticipation has contributed to a weaker US Dollar (USD).

Australia’s economy has demonstrated resilience, supported by positive employment figures and rising incomes, as indicated by recent data. The country’s Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for December also showed improvement, lending further strength to the Australian Dollar. Key events in the coming days, such as the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) Meeting Minutes, Australia’s Building Permits, and Housing Starts data, will be closely watched by traders. Additionally, the Interest Rate Decision by the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) on Wednesday is expected to impact the Aussie Dollar.

Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell, in an interview with Sky News TV, expressed optimism that China will lift its tariffs on Australian wine. This comes as China has already eased trade restrictions on most Australian exports, signalling a thawing of relations between the two nations.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) has been losing ground, retracting from its recent advances. It had previously rebounded from a four-month low, supported by an improvement in the short-term yield of the US Treasury bond, with the 2-year yield reaching 4.48% on Friday.

The US saw mixed preliminary PMI data for December, with the S&P Global Services PMI increasing slightly and Manufacturing PMI showing a decrease. Upcoming US data releases, such as Consumer Confidence and Existing Home Sales Change, are likely to influence market sentiment.

The US Dollar is facing headwinds due to a shift in market sentiment following the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) dovish statement. Comments from Federal Reserve officials, including Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic and Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee, suggest the possibility of interest rate cuts in 2024, adding to the pressure on the Greenback.
