Stock markets across the Asia-Pacific region saw gains on Tuesday, recovering from sharp declines in the previous session amid concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and the threat of further tariffs on China.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 6.03%, closing at 33,012.58, while the Topix index gained 6.26%, finishing at 2,432.02. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 climbed 2.27%, ending the day at 7,510. South Korea’s Kospi index edged up by 0.26%, closing at 2,334.23, and the small-cap Kosdaq saw a 1.1% increase, closing at 658.45.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rebounded by 1.51%, closing at 20,127.68, and the Hang Seng Tech Index saw a 4.49% rise. This followed significant losses on Monday, when the Hang Seng Index posted its largest one-day drop since 1997.
Mainland China’s CSI 300 also gained, rising 1.71% to close at 3,650.76.
Despite the positive movement in most regional markets, some indexes saw declines. Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite dropped 7.87% after trading resumed following a circuit breaker. Vietnam’s benchmark index lost 6.48%, and Thailand’s SET index reached its lowest level since March 2020.
The recovery in Asia follows concerns triggered by President Trump’s tariff announcements over the weekend. A 10% tariff on Chinese imports took effect, with further tariffs threatened unless China lifts its duties on U.S. imports.
U.S. stock futures saw an uptick on Tuesday, following the previous day’s losses on Wall Street. Futures for the S&P 500 gained around 1%, Nasdaq-100 futures rose by 1.1%, and Dow Jones futures climbed by 1.2%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 0.91% on Monday, marking its third consecutive day of losses. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite rose by 0.10%, and the S&P 500 declined by 0.23%.
As markets continue to react to the evolving tariff situation, analysts remain focused on potential economic impacts and the direction of trade negotiations between the U.S. and China.
