In the latest edition of Amex Trendex, a monthly trend report from American Express that gathers insights from individuals in the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and Hong Kong, we explore consumer behavior and financial decisions. The report reveals several key trends, including the increasing interest in luxury items and the role of social media in travel planning. Additionally, it dispels the notion that securing a reservation at popular new restaurants is a deterrent to customers.
The survey targeted consumers with an annual household income of at least $50,000 or an equivalent in their respective countries, who travel by air at least once a year.
Luxury Goods Preferences According to American Express, the emergence of trends like “quiet luxury” and “stealth wealth” plays a significant role in shaping consumer behavior, with an emphasis on sustainability and craftsmanship when it comes to luxury goods shopping.
The survey found that 80 percent of respondents reported purchasing luxury items at least once a year. Notably, 71 percent of Generation Z and Millennials indicated a preference for buying these items rather than renting. Among the luxury goods, accessories such as shoes, handbags, wallets, and jewelry rank high on consumers’ shopping lists.
A notable finding is that nearly three out of four consumers prioritize the craftsmanship and sustainability aspects of their purchases over the appeal of a designer label. Furthermore, 70 percent of consumers express a preference for investing in premium brands over cheaper, fast fashion alternatives.
