On February 27, 2025, Cebu City will host the 4th Visayas Shipping Conference and Exhibit, bringing together more than 150 people who are involved in shipping and logistics from all over the Philippines. Organized by the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) along with the Chamber of Customs Brokers Inc. (CCBI) Cebu Chapter and the Visayas Unified Trucker Association Inc. (VUTA), the event aims to tackle important challenges in the industry and look for ways to grow.
MCCI President Mark Anthony Ynoc pointed out how vital the logistics sector is to the economy, explaining that problems like crowded ports, transport delays, and poor infrastructure can lead to higher costs for businesses, which often result in higher prices for consumers, contributing to inflation. He stressed the need for investments in modern infrastructure, such as better roads and ports, to help goods move more efficiently and lower operational costs.
The conference will cover various issues impacting the supply chain, like traffic and port congestion, staffing shortages, and rising fuel prices. VUTA President Israel Alin stressed that working together and adopting new, sustainable practices is essential for improving efficiency in the sector.
Economist Emilio “Jun” Neri Jr. from the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is expected to share his thoughts on the bright future of the logistics industry. Neri supports private investment in cold storage facilities, which would help stabilize the supply of perishable items, keeping prices steady and reducing inflation pressures.
The conference will also discuss how the growth of e-commerce is affecting the logistics sector. Elizir Lao, President of the Chamber of Customs Brokers Inc. Cebu, highlighted the need for the industry to embrace new technologies and upgrade infrastructure to meet the growing demands of e-commerce and the expanding manufacturing sector.
This event builds on MCCI’s earlier efforts to strengthen the logistics sector in Cebu. In September 2024, MCCI worked with key players in the logistics field to address issues like changing inflation rates and to take advantage of potential industry growth. These efforts are part of a larger plan to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of the logistics network in the Visayas region.
The 4th Visayas Shipping Conference and Exhibit aims to encourage conversations among industry leaders, policymakers, and other participants to create strategies that will promote innovation, sustainability, and resilience in the logistics sector, supporting economic growth and improving regional quality of life.
