Industry Experts Advocate for Zero Import Duty on Maize under TRQ

in Importing & Exporting, Industry

In light of the recent challenges faced by the agricultural sector, industry experts are calling for a reduction of the import duty on maize to zero under the Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) system. Currently, the import duty on maize stands at 15%, which stakeholders argue is exacerbating the difficulties faced by the sector.

According to industry representatives, the high import duty is impacting the cost of maize, which is a crucial raw material for various industries, including poultry and livestock feed production. The increased cost of maize is, in turn, driving up the prices of end products, affecting both producers and consumers.

A key concern highlighted by stakeholders is the shortage of maize due to adverse weather conditions and other supply chain disruptions. The 15% duty on maize imports is seen as an additional burden, limiting the ability of industries to source affordable maize from international markets.

Experts are urging the government to reconsider the current import duty structure under the TRQ system. They argue that reducing the duty to zero would provide much-needed relief to the agricultural sector, ensuring a steady supply of maize at competitive prices. This, they believe, would help stabilize the market, reduce production costs, and ultimately benefit consumers.

Furthermore, industry representatives point out that other countries have adopted similar measures to support their agricultural sectors. By lowering or eliminating import duties on essential commodities, these countries have managed to mitigate the impact of supply shortages and price fluctuations.

The call for a zero import duty on maize is gaining traction among various stakeholders, including farmers, feed manufacturers, and industry associations. They emphasize that timely intervention by the government is crucial to address the ongoing challenges and support the sector’s recovery.

In conclusion, the reduction of import duty on maize to zero under the TRQ system is seen as a necessary step to alleviate the current pressures on the agricultural sector. Stakeholders are hopeful that the government will take swift action to implement this change, ensuring the stability and sustainability of the industry.
