Virgin Media O2, a major telecommunications company in the UK, has introduced Daisy, a smart AI chatbot that aims to outsmart phone scammers. Daisy engages in lengthy and silly conversations with fraudsters, keeping them busy and stopping them from targeting unsuspecting people. She’s been trained using real scam calls, allowing her to sound surprisingly human by sharing random family stories and made-up details. Since beginning her work, Daisy has kept scammers on the line for as long as 40 minutes! This new initiative is part of the fight against the growing problem of phone scams, which totaled £2.3 billion in losses in the UK in 2023.
Murray Mackenzie, the director of fraud at Virgin Media O2, explained that Daisy helps turn the tables on scammers. While many people in the UK would like to waste scammers’ time, they often don’t have the means or the energy to do it. Daisy, on the other hand, has “all the time in the world” to chat with these fraudsters, providing an automated way to tackle a serious issue. Research shows that older adults, especially those over 75, are often targeted by scammers, making tools like Daisy crucial for protecting them.
