In 2024, the United States imported 22.5 million tons of rolled steel products, marking a 3.7% increase compared to the previous year. This information comes from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Overall, steel imports—covering both rolled and semi-finished products—grew by 2.5%, reaching a total of 28.86 million tons. Notably, galvanized steel imports surged by 35.5% to 2.99 million tons.
In December 2024, the US imported 2.12 million tons of steel, which was a 2.7% rise from November. In particular, rolled steel products saw a significant monthly jump of 14.3%, totaling 1.82 million tons. During this time, hot-rolled flat products made up the largest portion of imports.
The main countries supplying steel to the US in 2024 were Canada, Brazil, and Mexico, which together contributed 14.57 million tons. This was an increase from 2023, a year when imports dipped due to high tariffs, increased domestic production, and lower demand.
Despite the rise in imports, US steel production fell by 2.4% in 2024, totaling 79.5 million tons. However, the US continues to rank among the top ten steel producers in the world.
